PASSPORT TO BURLINGTON COUNTY

HISTORIAN OFFERS 21 PLACES TO VISIT “IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD”

The Burlington County Historian invites you to visit "21 Places in Your Own Backyard” by using the Burlington County Tourism PASSPORT throughout the Summer and Fall.

The focus is on the “In Your Backyard!” initiative that was introduced several years ago by the County’s Division of Cultural Affairs and Tourism. Featuring a “Passport to Burlington County,” the program invites residents to visit the many historical sites that can be discovered throughout the county in a quest for a greater appreciation of the rich history “in their backyard.”

Passports may be obtained from the Office of Cultural Affairs and Toursm in Eastampton and each contains a list of 21 sites that are a part of the the initiative.

The sites are :

  1. the Air Victory Museum in Lumberton;
  2. the Jack Allen Memorial County Living Museum in Southampton;
  3. the Historic Batsto Village Museum in the Wharton State Forest;
  4. the North Pemberton Railroad Station and Museum in Pemberton;
  5. Peachfield in Westampton;
  6. Historic Whitesbog Village in Pemberton;
  7. the Palmyra Cove Nature Park;
  8. the Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge in Medford;
  9. the Rancocas Nature Center in Mount Holly;
  10. Kirby’s Mill in Medford;
  11. the Roebling Museum;
  12. the Historic Burlington County Prison Museum in Mount Holly;
  13. the John Woolman Memorial House in Mount Holly;
  14. the Vincentown-Tabernacle Telephone Museum in Vincentown;
  15. the Pinelands Visitor Center in Southampton;
  16. the Fort Dix Military Museum;
  17. the Burlington County Historical Society Museum in Burlington City;
  18. the Underground Railroad in Burlington City;
  19. the Mansion and Museum at Historic Smithville Park in Eastampton;
  20. the Atsion Mansion and Village in Shamong;
  21. Paulsdale in Mount Laurel.

You may pick up your passport at any of the 21 venues or by calling the Office of Cultural Affairs and Tourism, at 609-265-5068.

Your Passport to Burlington County History

The new 2010 PASSPORT will be available by April 15. In 2010, four additional sites have been added to the seventeen listed in the posted passport. They are:

Atsion Mansion and Village, 744 Route 206, Shamong. (609) 268-0444; http://www.guilfoy.org/atsion.html Sunday tours (call to schedule) – May through October - Tours 11:30, 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 -Office open daily from 9 to 4.

Kirby’s Mill, 275 Church Road, Medford. (609) 654-7767; http://www.medford-history-nj.org/; Tours every Sunday: 1 to 4 p.m.; Group tours by appointment; Special Events

Roebling Museum; 100 Second Avenue, Roebling (609) 499-7200; www.roeblingmuseum.org; Call for tour information. Massive Millyard artifacts outdoors. Enter museum site from Hornberger Ave. River Line station stop.

Paulsdale – Alice Paul Institute 128 Hooton Road, Mount Laurel (856) 231-1885; http://www.alicepaul.org/; Open house tours: One Saturday per month (see website); 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. - $5 adults; $4 children. Call for group tours
